Run, run as fast as you can. At Walt Disney World in January it's all about the marathon. Sure, you might not notice it if you just go to the parks, but many recreational (and more serious runners) hit the pavement at Disney World near the beginning of January to take on the marathon, half marathon, 10K, or 5K. These races are early in the morning (way before the parks open), but most of the runners and their spectators stay or come back to enjoy a day at the theme parks. So look out for some crowds (this year particularly the weekend of January 9 - 11, 2015).
This year, running really is the theme in January because not only is it the famous marathon weekend January 9 - 11, but there is also a Star Wars Half Marathon Weekend. Getting exhausted just thinking about it? From January 15 - 18, 2015, many runners and Trekkies and Trekkie runners will be at Disney World due to these running events which include a half marathon, 10K, and 5K.
Runners must pay to do all of these races (5Ks start at over $50, the longer the race, the more it costs) AND the entry fees contribute to a charity, everything from kids' hospitals and leukemia foundations to land conservation and animals. You will need to visit the race registration website to see what charity is being supported.
If you are coming with young children, there are kids races as well, but if running at Disney World isn't your family's idea of a great time, Downtown Disney and the parks are still great options.
While the temperature is too low for the water parks, it's great for the non-water parks like Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and Animal Kingdom. There will be lines, but not like the summer and no worries about getting a horrible sunburn or being unbearably thirsty due to the heat.
Young children will want to meet the characters and Cinderella as well as other Disney princesses will be at Citricos restaurant at Grand Floridian Resort & Spa beginning January 8, 2015. This is because Cinderella's Royal Table will be closed for renovations from that time until a date in March. Oh no, you say maybe we should postpone the visit? Let me say this again...Cinderella and the princesses will be at Grand Floridian Resort & Spa. Yes, that's right moms and dads, Resort & Spa.
